Mullerthal, Luxembourg
Also know as Little Switzerland, the region provides wonderful sites and activities. It features the oldest town here Echternach, various hiking trails, that enable to explore valleys, rock formations and nature. The bridge and the Schiessentumpel waterfall make it one of the most popular hiking sites. The location, found in a secluded forest, looks really enigmatic.
Misarela Bridge, Geres, Portugal
The Peneda Geres National Park is located in the northern part of the country and borders with Spain. Tombs and other archeological evidence date human activities here back to 6000 years B.C. Besides historic significance, the park is also a home for various endangered species and plants, therefore tourism is controlled.
The 165 m (541 ft) tall waterfall is one of the most popular attractions in Hordaland county. Its two streams plunge from the lake, that is situated above the rocky hill. The six-arched old bridge made of stone creates a great trail to admire the dramatic view and provides a scenic ride.
Probably the most popular attraction in Kromlau is located in the largest park in Saxony. In summer its lush greenery and blooming flowers make it a wonderful natural retreat. The outstanding bridge was built around 1860s although it looks so Medieval. The most memorable thing about it is a reflection in the river Rakotzsee, which creates a full circle.
The picturesque bridge is found in the region of Emilia-Romagna. It is considered to be the symbol of a small town of Bobbio. According to the legend the bridge is a result of Saint Columba’s fight with Satan. Ponte Gobbo has probably originated during the Roman reign. What is known for sure that it was here in the 12th century already.
Devil’s Bridge, Andermatt, Switzerland
Found in the scenic Reuss Valley the bridge crosses the Schöllenen Gorge. According to the legend, it was so hard to build a bridge here, that around the 13th century a desperate mayor called out for Devil’s help. Today the site features a hiking trail, which is relatively easy to complete, but provides various picturesque views.
Found in the Kengdi village, the bridge is said to have been built across the river during the Ming Dynasty, which makes this architectural wonder a several hundred years old! It is one of the most preserved sites in China along with couple other old wooden bridges in the county.
Gaztelugatxe, Basque Country (Spain)
There is a small 10th century church on the top of a rocky islet, which is connected with a mainland by a bridge. Throughout the ages the hermitage has been a target of various fights. However, dramatic history as well as surroundings only add up an extra intrigue to the site.
Built between 1886–1894, the bridge is among the most recognizable British landmarks. It dominates the cityscape and features in numerous films, shot in the capital. Visitors are allowed to climb to the towers and even hire the rooms for various events. The bridge represents Victorian Gothic style, characteristic to the 19th century.
